Win32PrioritySeparation Explained:
What 26, 28 and 2A Really Do

The most copied registry tweak in gaming, decoded bit by bit. What each value changes, why the famous "26" is the same as Windows' own setting, and what changed in Windows 11 24H2.

// QUICK ANSWER

Win32PrioritySeparation controls how long threads run before Windows switches (the quantum) and how much the foreground app is boosted (at most +2 priority). The popular value 26 (hex) is exactly what Windows writes when you choose "Programs" in Performance Options, and it behaves like the default 2. No value has measured FPS or input-lag gains. Leave it at the default.

The value lives at HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl\Win32PrioritySeparation. Windows only reads the lowest 6 bits, split into three 2-bit fields. Any value above 0x3F just repeats a lower value.

Bits 5-4 pick short or long time slices. Bits 3-2 pick variable (the foreground app gets longer slices) or fixed (all threads equal). Bits 1-0 set the foreground boost: 0, 1 or 2. Both reverse engineering (Noverse) and kernel-debugger reads (PC-Tuning) confirm this layout.

Windows 11 24H2 changed the scheduler: variable mode now uses quality-of-service based time slices and a new quantum-end timer. Tables written for Windows 10 are out of date on 24H2 and later.

Step-by-step

  1. 1.Check your current value

    1. Open Terminal and run the command below. On a fresh client install the result is 0x2.
    reg query "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl" /v Win32PrioritySeparation
  2. 2.Decode what you have

    1. 0x2 (2): Windows default. Short, variable, boost +2.
    2. 0x26 (38): written by "Programs" in Performance Options. Short, variable, boost +2: the same behavior as 0x2.
    3. 0x18 (24): written by "Background services". Long, fixed, no boost.
    4. 0x28 (40): short, fixed, no boost.
    5. 0x2A (42): short, fixed, boost +2.
    6. 0x16 (22): long, variable, boost +2.
  3. 3.Reset it to the default

If a tweak pack changed it, returning to the Windows setting is the safest choice.

    1. Press Win + R, type SystemPropertiesPerformance and press Enter.
    2. Open the Advanced tab and choose Programs under Processor scheduling. This writes 0x26.
    3. Or set 0x2 directly with the command below.
    reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl" /v Win32PrioritySeparation /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f

Check that it worked

  • ✓The reg query shows 0x2 or 0x26.
  • ✓Your games behave the same or better. This setting rarely changes anything you can measure.

What does not work (and why)

✗ 26 hex is the secret gaming value

It is what Windows writes for "Programs", and it acts like the default 2.

✗ 28 or 2A lowers input lag

Fixed time slices only matter when threads of the same priority compete for one CPU core. There is no measured latency gain.

✗ A higher value gives the game much more CPU priority

The foreground boost is at most +2, never into the real-time priority range.

✗ Windows 10 quantum tables apply to Windows 11 24H2

24H2 changed how time slices work. Always check which build a table was made for.

The parts that depend on your exact hardware

Everything above is free and safe on any PC. The parts below depend on your exact CPU, RAM, motherboard and games, so they need live testing. That is what a 1-on-1 YTUNE session covers:

  • ✓Process priority and core placement for your game, tested per CPU (dual-CCD Ryzen, Intel hybrid)
  • ✓A full audit of leftover registry tweaks from tweak packs
  • ✓Background CPU usage analysis with Process Explorer or System Informer

// FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the best Win32PrioritySeparation value for gaming?
The default. 0x2 and 0x26 ("Programs") behave the same. No value has measured FPS or latency gains in our sources.
Is 2A better than 26?
2A uses fixed short time slices with the same +2 boost. It only differs when same-priority threads share a core, and no source shows a gaming benefit.
Do I need to restart after changing it?
The kernel can update running processes, but restarting is the simplest way to make sure every program uses the new value.
Why do values like 0xffff3f91 exist?
Windows only reads the lowest 6 bits, so any larger number behaves like one of the 64 basic values.
