15 Windows Gaming Tweaks That Do Not Work (and How to Undo Them)
Fact-checked against reverse engineering of Windows and the best-known tuning guides. What each tweak really does, why it does not help, and the command to undo it.
Most registry and bcdedit "FPS tweaks" are clamped, ignored or no longer read by current Windows, and a few cause problems. The real gains come from drivers, in-game latency settings, display setup and BIOS/RAM. If you ran a tweak pack, undo the items below and measure again.
The competitive cleanup:
This list is checked against two sources: Noverse's reverse engineering of Windows 11 (what the kernel actually does with each value) and the PC-Tuning project (kernel-debugger reads and measurements).
A tweak landing here does not mean it can never change anything. It means there is no evidence it helps games, and often evidence it is ignored or risky.
Step-by-step
-
1.Undo boot timer tweaks
- Run in an admin terminal, then restart. "Element not found" means it was not set.
bcdedit /deletevalue useplatformclock bcdedit /deletevalue useplatformtick bcdedit /deletevalue disabledynamictick bcdedit /deletevalue tscsyncpolicy -
2.Reset the multimedia scheduler values
- Run in an admin terminal. These are the Windows defaults.
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile" /v SystemResponsiveness /t REG_DWORD /d 20 /f reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile" /v NetworkThrottlingIndex /t REG_DWORD /d 10 /fDo not delete SystemResponsiveness: a missing value is treated as 100, which disables the multimedia scheduler.
-
3.Reset Win32PrioritySeparation
- Choose Programs in SystemPropertiesPerformance > Advanced, or set
0x2. See our Win32PrioritySeparation guide.
- Choose Programs in SystemPropertiesPerformance > Advanced, or set
-
4.Turn the page file back on
- System Properties > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced > Virtual memory: tick Automatically manage paging file size for all drives, then restart.
-
5.Re-enable services a pack disabled
- If the Store, Xbox app, NVIDIA Control Panel, Bluetooth or Windows Update are broken, the pack probably disabled their services.
- The cleanest fix is a restore point from before the pack. Otherwise, an in-place Windows repair install keeps your files and apps.
Check that it worked
- ✓
bcdedit /enum {current}lists none of the timer values. - ✓Windows Update, the Store and your anti-cheat games work.
- ✓Your frametimes are the same or better than with the tweaks.
What does not work (and why)
✗ Disable HPET with bcdedit
Windows does not force HPET by default; "useplatformclock false" just matches the default.
✗ bcdedit disabledynamictick yes
Can stop time-slice checks on idle CPUs in Windows 11. No benefit shown.
✗ tscsyncpolicy enhanced
Not the Windows default, and on current Windows 11 the setting does nothing.
✗ SystemResponsiveness 0
Values below 10 are treated as 20. It only affects programs registered with the multimedia scheduler.
✗ NetworkThrottlingIndex ffffffff
Only matters while multimedia threads run and can raise network driver CPU time. 0 is treated as 1, the strictest cap.
✗ Games task: GPU Priority 8, SFIO Priority High
The multimedia scheduler never reads GPU Priority or SFIO Priority.
✗ Win32PrioritySeparation 26, 28 or 2A
26 equals the Windows "Programs" setting. The foreground boost is at most +2. No measured gain.
✗ MMCSS Clock Rate sets the timer
Clock Rate is no longer used and does not change the system timer.
✗ Disable the page file
Some games stutter or crash without it, even with lots of free RAM.
✗ Disable memory compression
It sits idle when you are not low on RAM. No gain on gaming PCs.
✗ Disable Automatic Maintenance
It only runs when the PC is idle.
✗ Debloat scripts and service packs
They break the Store, Xbox networking, NVIDIA Control Panel or Windows Update. Apps that are not running cost nothing.
✗ Clear shader cache / Prefetch for speed
Both are rebuilt afterwards, causing stutter or slower loads at first.
✗ DNS change, Nagle or static IP for ping
None of them change your connection to the game server.
✗ Disable Windows Defender for FPS
No measured gain in our sources, and it leaves the PC unprotected.
The parts that depend on your exact hardware
Undoing placebo tweaks is free. The changes that do move FPS and latency are hardware-specific, and that is what a 1-on-1 YTUNE session covers:
- ✓RAM timing tuning with proper stability testing
- ✓BIOS power, boost and memory settings matched to your CPU
- ✓Driver latency analysis with xperf and targeted fixes
- ✓Per-game latency and frametime testing

"fixed all the fps drops i was getting in apex hot drops. guy is super patient, explained everything live on anydesk and tracking feels so much smoother now. definitely recommend"
"overclocked my dualsense to 1000hz and isolated usb interrupts. 0 stick drift feeling, crosshair micro-adjustments are instantaneous on pc."
"was paying hone $10/mo for basically useless registry scripts that broke windows update. yassine did full bios memory subtimings via anydesk for $35 one-time. night and day difference."
