Windows Game Mode:
On or Off for Gaming? What It Really Does
Game Mode does not set your game to High priority or reserve CPU cores, despite what many guides say. Here is what it actually changes, when it helps, and how to test it on your PC.
Keep Game Mode on. It stops Windows Update from installing drivers or restarting during play and gives the game some resource priority. It does not set your game to High priority or reserve CPU cores. Turn it off only if a specific game measurably runs worse, and restart the game after changing it.
The competitive pick:
Noverse reverse engineered what Game Mode does in Windows 11. When a game registers, Game Mode sets the game process to Normal priority (not High), can raise related helper processes, sets GPU budget targets, and requests a gaming processor power profile unless you already use the High performance plan.
Two findings matter most. First, not every game registers: in Noverse's tests, Forza Horizon 5 and Cyberpunk 2077 did not. Second, on Windows 11 23H2, registered games lost the normal foreground priority boost; this was not seen on 25H2. The CPU core reservation that Game Mode can do was never observed in practice.
PC-Tuning's view matches: Game Mode blocks Windows Update activity and notifications, but can interfere with priority boosting, so test it.
Step-by-step
-
1.Turn Game Mode on
- Settings > Gaming > Game Mode > On.
-
2.Keep Xbox Game Bar installed
Games register with Game Mode through Game Bar components. Removing Game Bar can stop Game Mode from working.
- You can turn off Game Bar's shortcut and recording, but do not uninstall it.
-
3.Test it the right way
Game Mode mainly helps when background programs compete for resources, so average FPS on an idle PC can hide its effect.
- Keep your normal background apps running (Discord, browser, launcher).
- Run the same scene 3 times with Game Mode on and 3 times off. Restart the game after each change: the setting only applies at game start.
- Compare 1% lows, frametime spikes and PC latency, not just average FPS.
-
4.Keep the better setting
- If on and off measure the same, leave it on for the update protection.
- If one game runs clearly worse with it on, you can turn it off for that session. It is a global setting, so remember to turn it back on.
Check that it worked
- ✓Your 1% lows and frametime spikes are the same or better with your chosen setting.
- ✓Windows Update does not restart or install drivers during play.
What does not work (and why)
✗ Game Mode sets the game to High priority
It sets the game to Normal priority. Only related helper processes can be raised.
✗ Game Mode reserves CPU cores for the game
The mechanism exists, but it was never seen in use.
✗ Game Mode reserves VRAM
It sets GPU budget targets, not reservations. It mainly matters when other apps use the GPU heavily.
✗ Game Mode works for every game
Games must be identified by Windows. Some big titles did not register in testing.
✗ Game Mode causes stutter on every PC
No source shows a general stutter problem. Test your games.
The parts that depend on your exact hardware
Everything above is free and safe on any PC. The parts below depend on your exact CPU, RAM, motherboard and games, so they need live testing. That is what a 1-on-1 YTUNE session covers:
- ✓A background process audit with System Informer, which shows CPU use Task Manager misses
- ✓Priority and core strategy for dual-CCD Ryzen and Intel hybrid CPUs, tested per game
- ✓Power plan and scheduler checks matched to your CPU
